Chapter Fifty-Seven "Phoenix in His Arms"
The Spiked Drink and an
Unexpected Turn
The lively atmosphere of the party continued, the music pulsating through
the grand hall as students danced and laughed, their worries forgotten in the
moment.
While the celebration thrived, Kai
slipped away unnoticed, his steps silent as he navigated through the dimly lit
corridors of Phoenix Ridge University. His destination was the lecture hall—a
secluded place where he knew he wouldn't be disturbed.
Pushing the heavy wooden door open, he stepped inside, his eyes scanning the
room before settling on a shadowy figure leaning casually against the
professor’s desk. The stranger smirked knowingly, holding out a small,
inconspicuous packet.
“You got it?” he asked in a hushed tone, scanning the area to ensure no one
was watching.
The figure smirked, pulling a small packet from their pocket. “Works exactly
how you want it to. Just make sure he drinks it all.”
Kai took the packet, his fingers clenching around it with satisfaction. “No
side effects?”
“Nothing permanent,” the person assured him with a chuckle.
"You're sure this will work exactly as I need it to?" Kai asked,
his voice low, his eyes sharp with intent.
The figure chuckled, crossing their arms. "Trust me, it'll do the
trick. Just make sure he drinks it all. No one will suspect a thing."
Kai nodded, gripping the packet tightly before slipping it into his pocket.
Without another word, he turned and exited the room, his heartbeat steady
despite the illicit exchange. He moved swiftly, making sure no one had followed
him, and merged back into the bustling crowd of the party.
Making his way to the refreshments table, he picked up a glass of banana
smoothie, a drink he had observed Jungkook favoring earlier. With a practiced
motion, he emptied the packet into the drink, stirring it swiftly while casting
quick glances around to ensure no one had noticed.
Satisfied that his actions had gone unseen, he picked up the glass and made
his way towards Jungkook, who was sitting on a chair, breathless and slightly
flushed from dancing. His skin glowed with a thin sheen of sweat, his hair
slightly tousled, and Kai’s lips curled into a smirk.
Perfect.
Looking around and confirming that Taehyung’s sharp eyes weren’t on him, he
approached Jungkook with a friendly smile.
"You look like you could use a little energy boost," Kai said
smoothly, offering the glass with a small smile. "The party's far from
over."
Jungkook chuckled, stretching his arms. "Thanks, man. That actually
sounds perfect." He reached for the glass just as a blur of movement
intercepted it.
Kai stepped back immediately, not wanting to draw attention. His heart
pounded with excitement as he watched Jungkook lift the drink to his lips. Just
a little more…
But before Jungkook could take a sip, a hand shot out and snatched the glass
away.
"Oh my god, I'm dying of thirst!" Niki groaned, snatching the
glass from Jungkook’s hand before he could react. Without a second thought, she
downed the smoothie in one go, sighing in relief before plopping into the chair
beside him. "Lifesaver, bro!" she mumbled, patting Jungkook’s
shoulder.
Jungkook blinked in surprise before bursting into laughter. "You’re
crazy, Niki."
Kai, standing stiffly, forced a chuckle, masking the annoyance bubbling
beneath his skin. His fingers twitched at his sides as he struggled to keep his
expression neutral. This was not how things were supposed to go.
As Niki sat, she stretched her arms and leaned back, completely oblivious to
what she had just consumed, Kai clenched his fists and quickly excused himself,
disappearing into the crowd before anyone could sense his frustration.
His plan had taken an unexpected turn, but Kai was not one to give up so
easily.
Casually, he made his way back to the drinks table, grabbing another
smoothie. This time, he was more discreet, swiftly slipping another dose of the
powder into the glass before walking back to Jungkook with an easy smile.
"Man, I didn’t expect Niki to steal your drink," Kai chuckled,
offering the second smoothie. "Here, have this one instead."
Jungkook, still laughing at the earlier incident, accepted it without a
second thought. "Seriously, I can’t believe she just grabbed it like
that," he said before taking a long sip. The cool, creamy taste was
refreshing against his throat, and he sighed in relief.
"Ah, that’s good," he murmured, finishing half the glass in one
go.
Kai smirked, satisfaction flickering in his eyes. This time, his plan had
worked.
Now, all he had to do was wait.
The night was still young, but the unpredictable had already begun.
